Google Chrome in itself is blazing fast… But quite a few households use Slow PC, while some notebooks / netbooks make you cry in anticipation for a single page-load.
I actually own an Asus EeePC & know how painful it is to see a page loading.
Anyways.. there are 3 Ways to Improve Performance:
1) Keep Google Chrome Updated:
This is a no-brainer. To confirm you are using the latest version of Google Chrome: Make sure you are connected to internet (duhh!) & fire-up Google Chrome
Click on the “Spanner” Icon & Select “About Google Chrome”. If it’s up-to-date.. It will inform so OR it will ask you to Update.. Simple.
2) Install Ad Block Extension:
Available HERE.
MANY must be using the Adblock Plus for Mozilla Firefox. Well.. This is Similar, BUT for Google Chrome! It simply does the SAME thing! Its amazing. Page loads faster & that too without Ads!
Give it a try & your web experience will NEVER be the same again!!
Psst: I haven’t started work on “Most Useful Google Chrome Extensions”… But will do so shortly. As I use Firefox very often & Adblock Add-on is the most important.. the co-relation for Chrome came to me naturally.
Please consider donating the creator of Adblock.
3) This is a bit geeky.. but ANYBODY can do this. Google’s user-interface is VERY SIMPLE!!
Enable Hardware Acceleration!
There has been a LOT of talk about Hardware Acceleration in the past. But it has been the area for VERY intensive processes.. where sequential processing was important.. NOT Concurrence! But things have moved ahead VERY rapidly & so have CPUs & GPUs (Graphics Cards!)
Hence, it is now possible to enable hardware acceleration on MANY PCs & Laptops to give Chrome that additional Boost.
CAUTION: if Video Performance suffers (E.g.: Youtube video seems laggy or jagged.), then disable hardware acceleration.
HOW to do it:
Turning “Hardware Acceleration” on in Chrome 9 (stable) is easy, and it can significantly speed up surfing on low-powered devices, like laptops — or if you’re the kind of person who has 30+ tabs open on your desktop PC. I’ll show you how to turn on Pre-Rendering, too, which provides another nice speed boost.
Please note… you should have a decent net-connection too, to take full advantage of pre-rendering.
Fire-up Chrome & in NEW Tab Type: about:flags (Guess you did not know this!), It’s kinda like about:config in Firefox… BUT is ONLY meant for lab features that MAY NOT be available always & which may be yanked off anytime.
Scroll down and Enable “GPU Accelerated Compositing”. Just below that, also Enable “GPU Accelerated Canvas 2D”.
Please note Chrome 11 (Canary Release, don’t worry, version 9 is good enough) doesn’t have the ‘GPU Accelerated Compositing’ option, because it’s now turned on by default (Yeah!).
Scroll down further, and Enable “Web Page Prerendering”.
Finally, hit the RESTART button at the BOTTOM of the page.
Conclusion:
Now head to any shiny, graphical site and try scrolling! It should be a lot smoother. There are a LOT of other “Lab” features that can be ENABLED in about:flags, but I will check them out myself & write about them later.
Happy Surfing!
