I recently purchased the Samsung ES75 14MP Digital Camera. This camera is available in eye catching colours like: Red, Orange, Silver, Black & Sea Green. But I could get only the Black version. Vendor did not have ANY of the other colours.. What a shame
People must be wondering, in today’s date, wherein there are literally dozens & dozens of Cameras to choose from, WHY did I go for this camera…. Well there are a couple of points where THIS camera stands out (by a whisker!).
1) Budget:
Before embarking on ANY Purchase, one must fix a budget. Sure, you will exceed it, but, if you don’t have “firm” figure, you will surely be overwhelmed & end-up buying pretty expensive stuff. Sometimes you end up buying a Machine Gun, when a simple Sword would have sufficed!!
My budget was 6K to 7.5K In this budget, there were THREE Prominent Competitors: The Nikon Coolpix s3000, The Sony Cybershot DSC w320 & The Samsung ES75. I learnt of Samsung ES75 VERY Late. I had ALMOST finalized on the Nikon Coolpix s3000 for its price & its slimness!!
However, once I “discovered” ES75, it destroyed whatever chances I had of buying the other two.
2) Features:
For a Simple Point_N_Shoot, the most important aspects are:
a) Ease of Shooting
b) Speed of Switching ON (Time-Gap between you clicking the “On” Button & the Camera being completely ready for taking pictures!)
c) Least Hassles,
d) Lithium-ion Rechargeable Battery,
e) VGA (or Better) Video Capability with Sound (mono will do)
f) 4x or Better Optical Zoom
g) 4GB (or above) Memory Capacity
h) Acceptable Night Mode
i) Decent (non-over-bearing) Flash
j) Great LCD (preferably) 2.7” Inches
i) Some freebies!!
Booth s3000 & w320 had ALL the above features. However, the ES75 stood apart because:
a) Very Easy Menu driven interface (Even better than the other two)
b) 5x Optical Zoom (Both had ONLY 4x)
c) Samsung Zoom Lens (Having used Omnia HD, I know Samsung makes good Lens). However, I was leaning towards Carl-Zeiss Lens in the DSC w320.
d) A tilted Shutter Button. This small improvement really improved shooting process!! You have to use it to believe it!
“Features” like “Internal” Storage Capacity, “Digital” Zoom are useless that cost extra… Simply ignore/avoid!
My only grouch is NONE of the Cameras use Mini/Micro USB Ports which are pretty standard to manage data / charge battery. ES75 uses Samsung’s Propitiatory jack. But it does provide me a AV Cable too.. Guess I can use it as a Webcam?!
Along with the Camera I got a 4GB SDHC Card. I also got a unique Anti-Scratch Guard for the front-facia of the camera. But no Screen Guard for the Brilliant Auto-Brightness-Adjusting 2.7” LCD Screen!
Further, I even received a simple Camera Pouch with NO Shoulder-Strap! Talk about cheap!

Conclusion:
I had decided to Buy a Simple Point_N_Shoot Camera which will suffice & hone my impromptu photo taking skills. Further, the camera had to be cheap as I travel in a Mumbai Local Train & carrying an expensive camera EVERYDAY would have been risky. AND it had to have the possibly latest improvements of technology. After much searching I settled on Samsung ES75 & I like it.
I will not say love it because of three reasons:
1) Battery is ONLY 740mAh, whereas the others had & 900 / 950 mAh Capacity. Hence THIS battery will die VERY Soon before I can take any more than 200 Shots! What’s the use of my 4GB SHDC Card which can hold 2000 Pictures! (Photo Size: 5MP)
2) Vey Bulky. It is 22mm thick whereas Nikon’s s3000 was @18mm!! It feels like a miniature brick to hold.
3) It cannot detect more than 1 Face. VERY Sad. I had expected a simple camera should recognize at-least 3-5 People.
